Back To School Driving Tips to Keep Kids Safe

Students go back to school on Tuesday, September 5, 2017. Drivers are reminded to be extra cautious on the roads during this busy time of year. 


  1. Drive the speed limit. Be careful while driving in residential areas. Speed limits are reduced in school zones and playground zones.
  2. Stop when you see the school buses flashing red lights and the extended stop arm. Do not continue - until the flashing lights are turned off.
  3. Crossing guards are there to protect children – follow the rules.
  4. Do not pass other cars in a school zone – ever!
  5. Watch out for cyclists.
  6. Shoulder check before opening your vehicle door.
  7. Leave extra time to reach your destination.
  8. If see a reckless driving or suspect a driver is impaired, pull over as soon as it is safe to do so, and report the incident to police by calling 911.
  9. If you drive your children to school – let the kids off away from traffic.
  10. Walk a block.  It helps avoid vehicle congestion in the immediate area of the school.
